Summary:
For eighteen-year-old Gideon Blake, nothing but death can keep him from achieving his goal of becoming a U.S. Army Ranger. As it turns out, it does. Recovering from the accident that most definitely killed him, Gideon finds himself with strange new powers and a bizarre cuff he can't remove. His death has brought to life his real destiny. He has become War, one of the legendary four horsemen of the apocalypse. Over the coming weeks, he and the other horsemen--Conquest, Famine, and Death--are brought together by a beautiful but frustratingly secretive girl to help save humanity from an ancient evil on the emergence. They fail. Now--bound, bloodied, and drugged--Gideon is interrogated by the authorities about his role in a battle that has become an international incident. If he stands any chance of saving his friends and the girl he's fallen for--not to mention all of humankind--he needs to convince the skeptical government officials the world is in imminent danger. But will anyone believe him?

So, yeah, this one didn't work out for me. Which I mean, doesn't surprise me because there was a bit of hype for this book, and when there is hype I tend to not like them. As a fan of Veronica Rossi's other Under The Never Sky series, and new adult titles, I was so sure I was going to enjoy this one as well. But I didn't. There are so many factors that I don't like that I am not sure where to go with this review, I've read so far in, but I still know NOTHING

My biggest thing with books is my connection to the characters, in Riders I couldn't connect with anyone. You were in Gideon's story one moment, then in another moment in a undisclosed location where he is restrained. In the 166 pages I read there was nothing in the 4 (main) characters introduced to me that I could try and connect with. Gideon annoyed the hell out of me, everything was his military training taught him that, and he knew this because of the military. Gideon, we got it. You were in the military, you aren't anymore. You're war. In a sick sense it makes sense, doesn't it?

I found the plot slow, especially for the story the synopsis described. I expected something faster, and not full of hasty decisions and half assed plans that ended up no where anyway. The plot fell flat, I had no clue what was happening. It was just frustrating. In 166 pages we knew almost nothing about Daryn or Sebastian only their positions, I had no clue who the Kindred were. Typically by this point you at least know something. I knew nothing. I'm just very disappointed in this book. I feel like Riders had so much potential and it just wasn't living up to it, falling flat.

Since everyone but me liked it, I say give it a shot. But for me this is something I won't be continuing on with in the future. If Rossi comes out with another series I'll read that. (She is still on of my favorites) But Riders just wasn't for me.

  1. You're not the first reviewer I've come across who DNFed this one. I haven't read it yet, but enjoyed Under the Never Sky. However, slow pacing, not connecting to the characters... I hear ya. I probably would've quit reading too.

  4. Sorry you didn't like it. I have been hesitant about this one and this kind of confirms why I didn't want to read it in the first place. : /
