I won this book in a giveaway a few months ago, and I was really excited when I found out that I won, because I've really been looking forward to reading this one. What first drew me to this book was its cover, which is so amazing and beautiful that I've probably sent my boyfriend a million Snapchats of it by now. And then once I read up about it, I definitely knew this was a book that I wanted to read. So without further ado, let's get into my review!
One of the things that I loved most about this book was how Izzy was a character who enjoyed sex and was incredibly unapologetic about it. While I totally agree that it's everyone's own choice whether or not to have sex and making their own decisions with their bodies, there's always been this sort of underlying stigma that teen girls that enjoy sex are viewed as "promiscuous" or "slutty" or an entire slew of words that are insulting and degrading and absolutely not true. So seeing a character so unapologetic about what she wants and not taking any shit when people try to put her down about it really made me feel good, both as a reader and a teen girl myself. (Although I guess I'm not a teen anymore....which is a scary thing to realize.)
A character that I really didn't enjoy was Danny -- I wasn't a fan of him from the very beginning. I felt that he was really entitled, and some of the things that he said and did to Izzy were so ridiculous that I couldn't even understand why she'd want to be friends with a guy like that -- but I was definitely cheering her on during the times that she put him in his place. He was definitely my least favorite character in the entire story.
This was honestly such a great story that I think everyone needs to keep up. It's a celebration of girls making choices for themselves with their own bodies, and it was really great to see. I cheered this book on from start to finish, and I've already recommended it to a bunch of my friends as well, because this is the type of story that needs to be shared!
Overall, I really enjoyed reading The Exact Opposite of Okay by Laura Steven. If this book isn't on your TBR yet, it definitely should be, because it's so hilarious and positive and I was cheering Izzy along the entire way. I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel of this book (coming March 2019) so I can keep up with Izzy's antics!
