This book is the third -- and final -- book in the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy, and I couldn't be more excited to read it. So now that I finished this book (and, ultimately, finished the trilogy), I don't even know what to do with myself, because I know I'm about to have the biggest book hangover of all time. So without further ado, let's get into my review!
As the summary explains, Su Yi is dying, the great matriarch of Tyersall Park, and when she's on her deathbed, everyone shows up because they want to have a piece of her fortune, so it's hard to tell who's real and who's fake. On top of this, Kitty Pong is trying her hardest to make herself into a high-society woman to be jealous of, unfortunately to no avail because she keeps making the wrong decisions around every turn. And it gets more dramatic even still -- because Astrid is trying to juggle her love life and her family life, all while staying out of the view of the cameras and the tabloids. But the question is, can she do it? There's definitely some drama going down in this book, that's for sure!
I really enjoyed all of the drama and everything that takes place in this book! Just like with the first two books, this one kept me on the edge of my seat. I was reading over 200 pages a day because I kept flipping pages and wanting to know what would happen next. If there's one thing Kevin Kwan is good at, it's creating endings to chapters that make you just absolutely salivate, dying for more, which is how this book hooked me pretty quickly. Also, as usual, this book was filled with so many laughs, so many secrets, and definitely plenty of backstabbings. Without spoiling the book, all I'm going to say is that you definitely learn a whole lot about some of the major players in this book -- secrets that you absolutely wouldn't see coming. And there are a lot of them, so hang in there for that!
The only reason that I didn't give this book a five star rating like the other two was because I felt like there wasn't as much drama going on in this one that kept you on the edge of your seat. A lot of it was some slower-rising stuff. And let me just say that there's nothing wrong with that if that's the kind of writing style you like -- it just felt a little slower to me than the first two books in the trilogy. However, this one was still packed with drama and secrets and schemes -- any reader picking up this book in isolation would probably think this is the most dramatic book to ever exist, but when you look back on the other two books in the series, you realize that those two had even MORE drama, if that could even be possible. But let me assure you that it is, because this trilogy is absolutely a roller coaster ride! I've said that before about other books, but I didn't truly realize what that meant until now.
(MAJOR spoilers in this paragraph -- skip to the next one to avoid them!) Before I finish this review, WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT THAT ENDING. Seriously, so much stuff happened in such a short amount of pages! First of all, Peik Lin and Allister? It was super adorable, but that was something I definitely didn't see coming. Also, I really don't like Kitty and I'm glad she made kind of the "right" decision in the end, but still -- not a huge fan of her and her pompous attitude. Astrid and Charlie -- I thought it was going to be their wedding, but it seems like they still got their own little happily ever after in a way, so that worked out. Colette literally catching on fire? That's actually hilarious because at first I started to feel for her because I thought she changed, until she lashed out at Carlton at that dinner, and then I was reminded of why I hated her all over again. Lastly, RACHEL AND NICK?!?!?!?! The baby?!?! Ugh, I know the book definitely ended in the spot it needed to, but I'd die for a little novella or short story or something about Rachel and Nick as parents. I think that'd be so adorable!
Overall, I really enjoyed reading Rich People Problems. This entire trilogy has given me so much comedy, drama, backstabbing, plot twists, swooning, gasps, crying, and envy in all the best ways -- I'm so glad that I picked up the first book and decided to read it. I'm also glad that I decided to read the trilogy after all three of them have been published, because I didn't really have to wait to pick up the next book and dive back into the drama. I'm not sure I would've survived if I had to wait on cliffhangers for that long! If you're looking for a drama-filled trilogy that you'll breeze through -- one that makes you laugh and cry and do everything in between -- then the Crazy Rich Asians series is definitely for you. So what are you waiting for? Add it to your TBR immediately!!!!
