2020 Debut Author Interview: Karin Biggs!

In 2019, we made it our goal is to work with as many debut authors as possible and spread the word about their debut novels. It was such a success last year that we decided to continue the fun this year as well! Follow us this year as we pick the minds of the 2020 debuts and chat with them. Also stay tuned for news of giveaways, Twitter chats and more!
At the end of 2019, we Tweeted about wanting to discover more debut authors and their books. We ended up finding Karin Biggs and her novel THE KING'S 100, and we have been interested in it ever since. We are so excited to have Karin on the blog today to answer some of our questions!

Karin Biggs

Karin is an event planner turned stay-at-home-mom. She's always wanted to be a writer, so she chose the most chaotic time in her life to pursue her dream. When she's not writing or chasing her toddler, she can be found singing in a local acapella group, savoring down-time with her husband or reading a YA novel with a fantastic romantic plot.

The Book Bratz: First of all, congratulations! How does it feel to be a debut author?
Karin: Thank you! It feels like a long time in the making, but so glad the day is almost here! The King's 100 releases on July 21, 2020. The publishing timeframe can feel like a stretch at times, but I've spent the past year building my social media platforms and connecting with other readers and writers.
The Book Bratz: In your opinion, what's the best part of the writing process? What's the hardest?
Karin: The best part of writing is when you finally feel like a scene has come together...the hardest is when you know there's something off with a scene or act and get stuck on how to change it -- but that's why having critique partners and betas is so important! I'm also a stay-at-home mom, so finding time to write (especially during a pandemic) is challenging.

The Book Bratz: Where did you get the inspiration for THE KING'S 100?
Karin: Eight years ago, I had a dream about a girl who was getting ready to sing on stage for a king. I started writing down ideas for a book about the dream the next morning and over the course of the following years. It wasn't until 2017, after I became a stay-at-home mom, that I was able to focus all my "extra" time on completing my novel. I also took inspiration from my experience in multiple performing groups as a singer and mixed that with my love for romantic princess stories. Stephanie Garber's Caraval served as inspiration for my second and final draft of the King's 100 - I had a meeting with myself and asked the question, "why do I love Caraval so much and how can I incorporate those elements into my own book?" Well, turns out that romance + mystery + friendships/family relationships is what appealed to me about Caraval, so I made sure that my second draft mirrored those themes.

The Book Bratz: Who was your favorite character to write? Who was the most difficult?
Karin: My favorite character to write was Darden McCray - a King's 100 court member who believes himself to be the best magician in the kingdom and becomes my MC's first confidant. The most difficult character to write was my MC, Piper. Writing in first-person has its benefits, but you have to pay constant attention to their thoughts and emotions at ALL times since the reader is seeing the story through their eyes.

The Book Bratz: Tech, royalty, secrets...there's nothing that this book doesn't have! How did you keep all of these details in order while you were plotting?
Karin: For my first draft, I created an Excel calendar of the timing for each event, character intro and chapter summary. I actually borrowed the same plot outline template that JK Rowling used! By the time I was ready to write my second draft (a TOTAL rewrite!) I had all the details and timelines memorized, so I just wrote from memory. If I had any notes I needed to come back to, I used my handy-dandy notebook and a pen.

The Book Bratz: What do you hope that readers will take away from THE KING'S 100?
Karin: Now more than ever, I want readers to have a story that will take them on an escape. I want them to feel swept away by the world, the romance and/or the plot to give them a break from the real world. I know it's nearly impossible to write a book that appeals to everyone, but if a reader enjoys even one element of my story, that's enough for me. Job done.

The Book Bratz: Do you plan on returning to the world of THE KING'S 100 in the future, or do you have any other projects in mind? Can you tell us anything about them?
Karin: Yes and yes! I have the second book in the King's 100 series plotted out and haven't decided if I want to keep it as a three-book series or merge it as a duology. I don't want to lead fans on a path of false information until I know for sure! And I'm almost done with a totally different manuscript - a YA historical fiction romance that takes place in 1947 during the infamous Roswell, NM UFO crash. Before this book baby releases in July 2020, I will be giving birth to my second human baby in June. I'm hoping to get back into the world of the King's 100 this fall after a short writing break to focus on baby and the book release!

ARC Review: Today Tonight Tomorrow by Rachel Lynn Solomon

Title: Today Tonight Tomorrow
Author: Rebecca Lynn Solomon
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Rating: 5/5 Stars
Hardcover, 384 Pages
Publication Date: July 28th, 2020

Summary: Today, she hates him. It’s the last day of senior year. Rowan Roth and Neil McNair have been bitter rivals for all of high school, clashing on test scores, student council elections, and even gym class pull-up contests. While Rowan, who secretly wants to write romance novels, is anxious about the future, she’d love to beat her infuriating nemesis one last time. Tonight, she puts up with him. When Neil is named valedictorian, Rowan has only one chance at victory: Howl, a senior class game that takes them all over Seattle, a farewell tour of the city she loves. But after learning a group of seniors is out to get them, she and Neil reluctantly decide to team up until they’re the last players left—and then they’ll destroy each other. As Rowan spends more time with Neil, she realizes he’s much more than the awkward linguistics nerd she’s sparred with for the past four years. And, perhaps, this boy she claims to despise might actually be the boy of her dreams. Tomorrow…maybe she’s already fallen for him.

I received an ARC of TODAY TONIGHT TOMORROW from the publisher in exchange for an honest review, and let me tell you, I'm SUPER glad that I did! I read this entire book super quickly because I just loved it so much and couldn't put it down. I've been on such a roll with finding five-star reads lately, so being able to gush about it is so exciting. So without further ado, let's get into my review!

As the summary explains, it's Rowan and Neil's last day of high school, and they're sworn enemies both battling to be valedictorian. And they also have Howl, their senior event (which I explain a little later in this review), and each of them wants to be the person that wins the cash prize. There are only a few problems: For starters, Rowan finds Neil incredibly frustrating. They're rivals. But it would also be beneficial for them to team up because the rest of the senior class is out to eliminate them. And then there's the biggest problem of all...that maybe there might be feelings other than hatred for each other that are brewing underneath the surface.

Like I said, I absolutely adored this book. I've been reading so many 5-star books lately and I'm LOVING it! Something that was really cool about this book for me was that the entire story takes place over one night. It was SUCH a great story that had me laughing, gasping, and swooning at all the right moments. There were also several exciting plot twists that made me feel ALL the feels -- this is definitely the type of enemies-to-lovers story that you want to keep on your radar!

The concept of Howl itself was also pretty awesome to read. It made me really wish that my school had done something cool like that during my senior year! Basically, without spoiling anything, Howl is their school's last-day-of-senior-year tradition that is part scavenger hunt and part Assassin. Everyone has a list of fourteen locations to take photos of various places throughout Seattle, but in addition to that, everyone is assigned the name of one other student that they have to "take out" (AKA remove their band from their arm). So to win you have to find all of the clues AND keep yourself from getting out before you make it to the end! So having the entire story be overlaid by this cool senior event was really fascinating and fun to read about!

Character-wise, I also really loved Neil. I thought he was absolutely HILARIOUS, and all of his banter with Rowan kept me laughing out loud, and some of the things he said were just so shocking or interesting or hilarious that I gasped out loud. As the book goes on, you definitely learn a lot more about him and his background and the secrets he's carrying around that Rowan doesn't really know about. There's definitely more to Neil than what Rowan originally perceives, that's for sure!

But perhaps the thing I loved the most about this book is that Rowan wants to be a romance writer. The de-legitimization of romance novels and the stigma that surrounds them is something that's discussed a lot in the book. As someone who lot only loves reading romances but is also writing her own and constantly has to battle that internal nervousness about it that Rowan does, it was SUCH a relief to see the fact that Rowan was speaking up about the legitimate power of romance writers and romantic stories, and fighting back against people who don't see it as "real" literature. I spent the entire book cheering her on because I felt the exact same way that she did, so it was such a breath of fresh air to see!

Overall, I absolutely *loved* TODAY TONIGHT TOMORROW and will absolutely be recommending it to friends and family for a long, long time. If you're looking for a cute, exciting, hilarious enemies-to-lovers story, then you definitely should be adding this one to your TBR!

EXCERPT:
Staring at his face, I noticed a faint, silvery scar underneath his right eye, as small as my thumbnail. I reached out with my free hand, tracing my fingertip along his skin. A featherlight touch, barely there. “What happened here?”
His gaze never left mine. “Baseball cleat. Fourth grade. One of my teammates threw it at me.”
“Some little league kid threw their shoe at you? Why?”
“I told him that he couldn’t bat very well.” Walsh shrugged. “He couldn’t take the truth.”
I snorted. “You were that kid? The dream crusher?”
“Well, someone had to be.” His small smile was unapologetic. “Ask me who the kid was.”
I looked at him for a moment before tipping my head. “No way. Scott?”
“Who else would be that aggressive as a fourth-grader?”
Dina pulled at my arm as I laughed, shaking my head at the thought of miniature Scott throwing a shoe at small Walsh. I stepped out from the tangle of leashes at our feet, glancing down. “Oh, your poor rich-boy shoes.”
“What?” Walsh looked at his feet. “Oh.”
Brown smeared the side of his expensive-looking shoe, probably coating along the bottom. “With dogs around, you should probably watch where you’re walking.”
Walsh let go of my hand to switch the leash and proceeded to try and smear the offensive substance onto the grass. “Now you tell me.”
“Should we clean the poop off your shoe together? Is that romantic?”
His response was dry. “Ha-ha.”
“What? Shouldn’t we get a photo and caption it, ‘This might’ve been an accident, but falling in love wasn’t’?”
“Watch it, or I’ll wipe it on your ankle.”
I jerked back just in case he tried it, nearly tripping over Dina’s wealth of leash.
