The Ultimate Con Packing Guide

Hey there, everyone! Today on the blog, I’m sharing my tips on how to prepare for the ultimate convention, right in time for Love N. Vegas! Love N. Vegas is an author event that will be taking place in Las Vegas October 27th-29th. We have some outfit and packing advice that you guys can hopefully find really useful!

What To Wear

When it comes to cons, our biggest advice is comfort. You're going to want to wear that adorable sundress with those strappy heels that are a perfect match. But while you may feel like your outfit is on point, you'll be riddled with blisters and discomfort later on. Here are some things we've learned to wear to conventions that are both cute and comfy:

  • Cardigans
  • Tank tops
  • Leggings
  • Ballet flats
  • Sneakers
  • Cotton sundresses
  • Soft tee shirts
  • Anything except jeans.
    • Seriously. Anything except jeans. The ultimate discomfort pants when you have to walk around everywhere and constantly stand up and sit down. Plus, sweating in jeans? Noooo thank you.

What To Pack

1. A backpack.

Definitely, hands down, without a doubt. It doesn't have to be a big, huge, schoolbag-worthy one, but that's definitely the kind of one that we'd recommend. Just make sure that you'll be able to fit a decent amount of books and freebies you'll be picking up, along with your lunch and other small things.

2. A small cross-body bag.

It doesn't need to be anything big--all it's for is storing your phone, your money, and your schedule. It would be way too much of a hassle to have to fish those things out of your bag of books and freebies and lunch and nonsense. Also store your business cards in there if you plan on giving them out. This was the best idea out of all that we're going to recommend to you!!

3. Your plan!

Write down all of the panels, signings and such that you know you MUST attend, along with their times and locations. And store that in your clutch for easy access. Two years ago, we made a not-so-solid plan, more of a loose guideline. Big mistake. This year, we're armed and ready with a full two-page worthy plan of what to make sure we do, what times, and how to get there. And in terms of travel, you can use helpful sites such as Vegas.com to plan your trip flawlessly!

4. Comfortable clothes/shoes.

Sure, you want to look cute while walking around and meeting other authors and bloggers, but you want to be comfortable too! Go for some comfy-yet-causal styles such as leggings, comfy flats, or sneakers. (We seriously recommend sneakers. Blisters are not a fun way to spend your day.)

5. A sweatshirt.

Because yes, contrary to popular belief, it does get chilly inside sometimes.

6. Deodorant.

Even though it may get chilly inside the stage room, the crushing crowds cause people to stress and sweat. Plus, since you're going to practically be squashed in with everyone, you want to make sure that you smell nice. (We wish several people had taken our advice about this when we were crammed in line waiting for John Green a few years ago.)

7. Cash.

There's no set amount that you need to bring with you, but lunch can be expensive, so if you don't plan on bringing your own lunch, bring a decent amount of dough with you. Even if you do bring your lunch, bringing $40-$50 along with you is helpful for buying books, paying for luggage storage, grabbing an extra drink/snack, or (of course, duh, because this is a book convention, people!) buying some books.

*Le sigh. We wish that was how it worked*

8. Any books you want to get signed.

A book event is going to be absolutely stuffed with amazing authors (especially your favorites!), so if you know that any of your favorites are going, toss a book of theirs in your bag to get signed. Seriously. Even if you know they aren't doing an autograph session, because you never know! Most autograph lines give out copies of the books, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

9. A lunch and some light snacks.

Chances are, time that you will spend waiting on line at the food court is time that you could be using to check out some more amazing things that BookCon has to offer. So bring your own lunch/snacks/drinks along with you so you can eat quickly and then go back to having an awesome time. Packing a lunch and eating it while on an autographing/panel line or while you have time to kill is the best option.

10. TWO water bottles.

Because dehydration is a nightmare, and you don't want to get sick on an awesome day like this. One water bottle was what we recommended in the past, and it wasn't enough.

11. A portable phone charger.

Augustus Waters's death may have been inevitable (*sob*), but that doesn't mean that your phone's has to be. Portable chargers are literally the 8th wonder of the world, so charge one up the night before and bring it along with you just in case your battery percentage dips into the single digits while you're out having fun.

12. Business cards.

If you're a book blogger, this event is one of the most perfect places to get the word out about your blog. Print up some business cards and bring them with you so you'll be ready to pass the word along!

13. Pen/pencil and a Sharpie.

You never know when you'll need a pen, and that applies to all areas of your life. And who knows if you'll bump into someone awesome and want their autograph?

14. Makeup/Hairbrush

As previously mentioned, you'll get pretty sweaty/disheveled during this entire ordeal, so these items are a must if you plan on slipping into the bathroom and freshening up before meeting your favorite author.

15. Yourself, ready for an awesome time!

Because this is going to be an awesome day!

Travel Plans:

Vegas always has the best deals on flights and hotels to help make your planning go smoothly. The site Vegas.com has a lot of information to help you learn more about the city if you want to explore when your not at the convention!

Hopefully this packing list helped you all out! Also make sure to share this post, because we want everyone to get to see this handy-dandy packing guide not to endorse ourselves, but to help everyone make sure they're prepared!

If you're going to Love N. Vegas, have an excellent time and make sure to plan your trip accordingly! :-)

Excerpt & Giveaway: So Near The Horizon by Jessica Koch

So Near the Horizon
Jessica Koch
Publication date: September 6th 2017
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

From the moment she crosses paths with Danny, Jessica is fascinated. The dashing, confident twenty-year-old has everything she dreams of—looks, success, independence, money—and his kind, infinitely cheerful nature is spellbinding.
Yet Jessica sees something else lingering underneath Danny’s perfect facade. Bit by bit, she manages to pick it apart, unveiling harrowing truths about a deeply traumatic childhood that has left more than just emotional scars. Now, far away from his home and family, he is fighting to build a normal life for himself—even though he may be destined for a future as dark as his past.
Despite all adversity and against all reason, a deep and intimate love develops between Danny and Jessica. But soon they find themselves confronting the harsh realities of a superficial world, battling against prejudice and exclusion at every turn… and, worst of all, racing against time…
Jessica Koch’s dramatic debut novel, Dem Horizont so nah (So Near the Horizon), broke every record when it hit stores in Germany 2016. Released through a small, independent publishing house, the e-book was an instant success, selling over 250,000 copies in just a few months and topping the Amazon bestseller list for more than six weeks – which made it the number-one bestselling German-language e-book of the year 2016!
Since then, one of Germany’s largest publishing houses has purchased the rights to this riveting and highly emotional memoir. The foreign rights have been picked up in numerous countries, and the feature film is scheduled to arrive in theaters at the end of 2018.
And now, for the first time ever, So Near the Horizon will be available in English! So Near the Horizon will hit online retailers in September 2017 – again as an independent publication, again without a huge marketing budget, but again with infinite passion for an unbelievable but true story that the world needs to hear.

EXCERPT:
As soon as I turned the corner, I saw him. In jeans and a royal-blue hoodie, he was leaning casually against a gleaming, black, thirty-foot limousine—a Lincoln Town Car—his arms folded. As always, his hair was sticking out in every direction. When he saw me, his face broke out into a radiant smile. A man dressed in black was standing at the front of the car, eyes downcast.
Chauffeur and everything? This is crazy…
My knees were threatening to give out, and my brain switched into offline mode again.
As I walked toward Danny, gaping in astonishment, he straightened and held out his hands. I took them, and his fingers closed briefly around mine. Once again, it was like he’d hit me with an electric shock.
“W-wow,” I stammered. “What’s all this for?”
“Because I’m falling in love,” he said quietly.
For a moment, the world stood still.
In love?
I was too stunned to react.
The chauffeur opened the car door, revealing an interior bathed in dim violet light. Still reeling a little, I settled onto the cream-colored leather upholstery that stretched across the entire length of the limousine, and Danny climbed in after me. The long marble-topped table in the center held a chilled bottle of champagne and two flutes already filled.
Danny handed me one of them, and we clinked our glasses together.
“I thought you didn’t drink,” I said shyly.
“Exceptions prove the rule,” Danny replied and took the first sip as the vehicle began rolling slowly out of the parking lot.
“How can you afford this kind of thing as a personal trainer?” I had no idea what it actually cost, but it surely wasn’t cheap.
He suppressed a grin. “I earn good money in my side job.”
“I knew it! You steal cars and sell them in other countries.”
“Um, no.” He looked genuinely perplexed.
“So you do the grandson scam? Knock on confused old ladies’ doors and make big eyes at them, and cry about how the Mafia is after you, and beg for money?”
He stared at me in surprise. Apparently, he hadn’t pegged me as someone with that much imagination. “It’s a lot less spectacular than that. Pretty boring by comparison, really. I just pose.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“For photos,” he clarified. “For a fashion label.”
“You model?” I shrieked at him. So he didn’t just look like a glossy-magazine model, he actually was one.
What the hell did this guy want with me?
In love, he said…
“Yeah,” he replied easily. “It’s nothing to scream about. They’re just photos. Ads, clothes, the usual. The pay’s good.”
“So that’s why you didn’t go to college?”
His expression turned grim. “No. That was for other reasons. Personal reasons.”
There it was again, that darkness in his eyes.
“Aren’t you afraid the modeling work will dry up someday when you’re old and ugly?” My curiosity knew no bounds.
“No, I’m not worried about that.” Then why did his voice sound so melancholy?
My champagne glass was empty by that point, but I felt awkward about refilling it, since Danny hadn’t taken his eyes off me. “There’s something I really don’t understand,” I began, emboldened by the champagne. “Why did you try to warn me away from you? Do you chop little girls up into pieces and bury them in the forest?”
The violet light gleamed in his hair as he tilted his head and regarded me. “I make drugs in my basement,” he said. “I have to be careful. Can’t let anyone find out.”
I regarded him skeptically. The problem with Danny’s dry humor was that you never knew whether he was joking.
He laughed quietly to himself when he realized I was trying to decide whether to believe him.
“Sarcasm is the sword of the intellectual,” he finally said. But then, all at once, his relaxed demeanor shifted again. “Seriously,” he said, “the fact is my life is one giant catastrophe. I don’t want anyone else to get sucked into it.”
Half relieved drugs weren’t involved, I shook my head. “Hey, I’ve never met a catastrophe I couldn’t handle!”
“I’m not joking,” he insisted. “If you have an ounce of sense in your head, you’ll walk away and never look back.”
“Sense was never my strong suit. I’m told teenagers aren’t sensible people.”
He sighed deeply. “Okay,” he said theatrically. “I’ll give you three choices, since you were kind enough to do so for me. All right?”
I nodded, a smile creeping onto my face.
“Then come on down, you’re the next contestant!” he said in his best TV-announcer voice. “Here are your options! One: A happy, worry-free life as a single woman. Two: Me. Three: You find a guy who’s right for you and live happily ever after. Pick a door, any door!”
“Door number two, please,” I announced, playing along.
“I’m serious!” Danny protested.
“So am I!” But I couldn’t help giggling. “It’s just hard not to laugh. You’re really funny!”
He raised a questioning eyebrow. “Funny ha-ha or funny strange?”
“Both.”
“Is it at least an equal mix?”
“No. One more so than the other.” I turned to look out the window, at the pedestrians watching with interest as our limo pulled into the movie theater parking lot.

Author Bio:
Jessica Koch (born in Ludwigsburg, Germany) began writing short stories when she was still in high school, but never submitted her work to publishers. In late 1999, shortly after beginning her studies to become an architectural drafter, she met Danny, a German-American dual national. Her experiences with him eventually formed the basis for So Near the Horizon, though it was nearly thirteen years before she felt ready to bring the manuscript to the public.
The author describes a life lived somewhere between hope and fear, between optimism and despair. She reflects on events from her own past with raw honesty, confronting more than one difficult subject along the way.
Jessica Koch lives near the city of Heilbronn with her husband, their son, and two dogs. The second and third books in the trilogy, So Near the Abyss and So Near the Ocean, are already best-sellers in Germany as well.

We'd like to thank the lovely team over at Xpresso for once again allowing us to be part of another great book tour! This book seems super interesting and the excerpt has us hooked...so if you'll excuse us, we'll be right back while we add this book to our TBR!

Waiting on Wednesday: A Short History Of The Girl Next Door by Jared Reck

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking The Spine where we highlight some of the upcoming books we can't wait to read!

Jessica's Waiting on:

30040068
Title: A Short History Of The Girl Next Door
Author: Jared Reck
Publisher: Knopf Books
Publication Date: September 26th, 2017

Summary: Fifteen-year-old Matt Wainwright is in turmoil. He can’t tell his lifelong best friend, Tabby, how he really feels about her; his promising basketball skills are being overshadowed by his attitude on the court, and the only place he feels normal is in English class, where he can express his inner thoughts in quirky poems and essays. Matt is desperately hoping that Tabby will reciprocate his feelings; but then Tabby starts dating Liam Branson, senior basketball star and all-around great guy. Losing Tabby to Branson is bad enough; but, as Matt soon discovers, he’s close to losing everything that matters most to him.

I received an advanced copy of this book at BookCon this past June, and I'm so excited to be starting it soon! The summary makes the book seem super interesting, and the way it leaves things off on a cliffhanger (especially when it comes to teenage true love) makes it all the more intriguing. I'm looking forward to finally getting around to reading this one and seeing where Matt's story takes him!

What are you waiting on this week? Leave your links so I can stop back!

Book Blitz & Giveaway: Just Three Dates by David Burnett

Just Three Dates
David Burnett
Publication date: July 1st 2017
Genres: New Adult, Romance

Should you only marry for love?
Since breaking with her last boyfriend, Karen has refused to trust any man her age. For the past three years, she has not dated the same one twice, and only one in ten has received even a goodnight kiss as she turned him away. Karen is an artist. She follows her feelings, lives in a cluttered loft, and gushes over vivid sunsets.
Mark still dreams about his almost-fiancée, and his date book has been empty since he threw her out a week before he’d planned to ask for her hand. His friends call him the “Ice Man,” since he seldom smiles, especially at a woman. A math professor at the College, logic guides his behavior, he loves order, and an elegant proof is a thing of beauty.
Both Karen and Mark have all but abandoned hope of ever falling in love, and, left on their own, these opposites would never attract. So, their mothers become matchmakers, entangling them in a series of dates, extracting promises that they will go out together three times, suggesting that, in the absence of love, a “marriage of convenience” is a live option.
If you like heartwarming stories based on true-to-life behaviors, with complicated relationships and a less-than-certain outcome, you will enjoy Just Three Dates!

EXCERPT:
“You need a wife.”
The waiter had just refilled his glass, and, as Mark Stuart raised it to his lips, taking a deep drink of water, his mother spoke, causing Mark to gag. He plunked the glass onto the table, snatching the napkin from his lap and covering his mouth, barely preventing the liquid from spewing out. Then he lifted his head to see his mother sitting back in her chair as if prepared for a fight.
Mark’s eyes met hers. He now understood her dinner invitation, why his father had not accompanied them to the restaurant, and the reason she had chosen the Plantation House, with its tuxedoed waiters, soft music, and thirty-dollar midday entrees—a place only a woman like Elizabeth Stuart would have selected as the scene for a confrontation concerning her son’s need for a wife.
Surely, he would not make a scene, not here, not in public, not as he had each time she had broached the subject in the past.
That was, without a doubt, what his mother would be hoping.
His eyes stayed fixed on hers as he took a deep breath, internally debating his response. Mark placed his knife and fork across his plate and reached for his glass—a goblet of wine—this time, taking a long, slow sip, returning the glass to the exact spot from which he had lifted it. Then, he rested one forearm on the table and leaned forward, primed to meet his mother’s attack.
Her hand quivered and a few drops of water sloshed over the rim as she lifted her glass for a drink, but she did not look away.
“Tell me, Mother, why do I need a wife?”
He almost smiled as her head snapped up, surprise written on her face. His question was uncharacteristic. Generally, he led with a denial.
“Mark, we’ve been through this so many times.” She sighed as she reached out to pat his hand. “You need a wife to help you in your career. A college is not solely an educational institution, you’ve seen that for yourself. It’s social. It’s political. You’re a brilliant mathematician, Mark, but if you want to be a department head, or president of a university, you must do more than teach and write papers. You’ll be expected to attend parties and dinners, court donors. You’ll always be expected to bring someone with you, a date, perhaps, but preferably your wife.
“If you do need a date, well, you are twenty-nine years old and practically all of your friends are married. You’ll soon find yourself recruiting your sister to be your date.”
She held up a hand as he began to respond. “Moreover, you’ll be expected to give parties and dinners, and you know nothing about such things. You need a wife who can help you.”
She paused, apparently waiting to hear his rebuttal. It would have been one she had heard before—his assertion that teaching was a noble calling, that he was happy to have received that call, and that he had no ambitions beyond the classroom.
But Mark knew she would counter each of his arguments and the back-and-forth would continue until they both were tired and angry, neither daring to mention the woman he had almost married—the real reason he had no interest even in dating, much less in marriage.
So, today, he did not rise to her challenge. He waited.
Seeming to take his silence as agreement, his mother continued.
“You’re lonely.”
Mark shook his head.
“Yes, you are. You live alone, you dine out by yourself. You love photography, you love hiking, and they are both solitary pursuits. You depend on me, your father, and your sister to listen when you want to talk. We love to see you, Mark, but, as I said, Emily is getting married, soon she’ll be busy with a family of her own. And your father and I, we’re getting older…” She opened her arms, palms up, as though her point should be obvious. “You need a wife.”
Again, Mark did not respond. His mother smiled, a jungle cat sensing a win. Still, she pounced for the victory move. “It’s expected, Mark. People will think something is wrong with you if you aren’t married.”
“You’re afraid they’ll think I’m gay?”
“If they thought that, it might be different, but you’re not,” his mother rolled her eyes, “so they will think you’re weird, or antisocial, or that you’re so disgusting no one will have you. Mark, you need a wife.”
Argument was pointless. His mother’s mind was made up and, knowing her, she had a plan of some kind, a plan he might as well hear now. In any case, he had not even dated in over three years so agreeing with her would not send him hurtling toward the altar.
“You may be right.”

September Book Recommendations!

SEPTEMBER RECOMMENDATIONS!

It's a new month and summer is winding down, but it's still time for some new book recommendations! Today, I'm bringing you three awesome reads that you need to pick up ASAP and bring with you to your last few beach days before school and work set in again. I'm excited to get back to school but also a little bummed because that means my reading time is going to slow down again -- so if you're in the same boat as me, take advantage of these three reads while you still have the chance!

Here are my recommendations for August!

Title: I Hate Everyone But You
Authors: Gaby Dunn & Allison Raskin
Publisher: Wednesday Books
Why I'm Recommending It: I received an ARC of this book from St. Martin's in exchange for an honest review, and I'm really glad that I got the chance to review it. It's a unique book that is told entire through email and text exchanges. It's a story about two teenage girls who are best friends but are going across the country to different colleges, so they're fighting to make their friendship work even when it came to new clubs, schools, people, and lifestyles. It made me laugh and cry at all the right parts and I really enjoyed it. If you want to read my review, you can click here!

Title: The Upside of Unrequited
Author: Becky Albertalli
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Why I'm Recommending It: I really enjoyed Becky Albertalli's first book, Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda, so I was super eager to get my hands on this book as well. It tells the story of a teen named Molly who is struggling with her twin sister getting a life that's separate from hers, while also juggling feelings and possible relationships of her own. This book was filled with a lot of adorable, super-sweet moments, and plenty of comedic scenes as well. You can read my review here.

Title: The One That Got Away
Author: Melissa Pimentel
Publisher: Thomas Dunne Books
Why I'm Recommending It: I received an advanced copy of this book from St. Martin's, and it was a super adorable romance that had me hooked from start to finish. Ruby broke up with the love of her life years ago, and in the years since they've been apart, his career skyrocketed as he became a famous tech mogul, while she's still struggling to make a name for herself. Their paths end up crossing again at a wedding over in England, and what ensues is interesting, to say the least! If you want to read my review, you can click here.

I hope you guys enjoyed my ninth recommendations post! The year may be coming to a close, but you can never have enough book recommendations! If you have any books that you think I should read based on these recommendations, feel free to let me know some of those too! And happy almost fall, everybody! :-)
