Review: The Last Letter by Rebecca Yarros

Title: The Last Letter
Authors: Rebecca Yarros
Publisher: Entangled: Amara
Rating: 5/5 Stars
Paperback, 426 Pages
Published February 2019

Summary: Beckett,

If you’re reading this, well, you know the last-letter drill. You made it. I didn’t. Get off the guilt train, because I know if there was any chance you could have saved me, you would have.

I need one thing from you: get out of the army and get to Telluride.

My little sister Ella’s raising the twins alone. She’s too independent and won’t accept help easily, but she has lost our grandmother, our parents, and now me. It’s too much for anyone to endure. It’s not fair.

And here’s the kicker: there’s something else you don’t know that’s tearing her family apart. She’s going to need help.

So if I’m gone, that means I can’t be there for Ella. I can’t help them through this. But you can. So I’m begging you, as my best friend, go take care of my sister, my family.

Please don’t make her go through it alone.

Ryan

I received a copy of this book in my Scribbler box a few months ago, when the writing theme was about creating relationships between the characters in a story. Being a huge romance junkie, I decided to take the plunge and read this book, even though I don't read a lot of NA or adult novels. I'm so glad I gave this book a chance, because it took me on the emotional rollercoaster of a lifetime and this book made me laugh, gasp, swoon, and yes, even full-on ugly cry. So without further ado, let's get into my review!

As the summary explains, Ella has twins that she's trying to raise on her own, all alone while trying to keep her family's bed and breakfast afloat. Her brother, who is in the military, connects her with another man in her unit, nicknamed Chaos, to be pen pals as a way of helping both of them with their loneliness. But then Ryan doesn't make it, and his dying with to Chaos (Beckett) is to go home to see his sister and to help her be okay with the dark, unspeakable demons that she's battling with her family. But when he gets there, things aren't what he expects...and he isn't ready to be honest with Ella, either.

You guys, I absolutely tore through this book because I loved it so much. It deals with so many different story lines that manage to interweave without getting complicated, and the story is so addicting that you find yourself flying through it in no time at all. This book made me laugh, and swoon, and cry, and gasp, and definitely blush a few times -- Beckett definitely knows what he's doing, that's for sure! Yarros is an excellent writer when it comes to crafting relationships, both familial and romantic, and I found myself really settling into the minds of the characters. Reading the story in alternating perspectives between Beckett and Ella was also really helpful in that regard!

My favorite character in this book was definitely Beckett. He was so sweet and kind and caring, and always there for Ella even when she didn't necessarily want him around. And even though he was battling his own demons, he always put his best foot forward and did whatever he could to be the best man possible. I found myself swooning for him from the very beginning and he's definitely a major book boyfriend contender. Not to mention the fact that he's suuuuuuuper hot! *swoon*

(MAJOR, MAJOR, MAJOR SPOILERS IN THIS PARAGRAPH! Skip to the next paragraph to avoid them!) Okay, when this book started wrapping up I found myself swooning and really happy, but then I got suspicious because there were still 30 or so pages left in the book...SO I NEVER SAW THE THING WITH COLT COMING. For real. I actually burst into tears and was outwardly sobbing, which is not something that I think I've ever done with a book I was reading before. I kept praying that Beckett would save him, especially after everything Maisie went through, and I am such a HEA person that I was convinced everything would turn out fine. But then when he died in Beckett's arms....oh my god. I literally lost it. I texted my boyfriend and ugly cried and vented for a little bit because I was so shocked -- I absolutely didn't see that coming at all. And Maisie's chapter in the end? It was so heartfelt and ugh!! I know I should be writing something eloquent but I was just a big ball of emotion that I didn't know what to say.

Overall, I absolutely loved reading The Last Letter. This book gripped me from start to finish and took me through an entire whirlwind of emotions. I was left feeling emotionally drained, but in one of the best ways after you read such an incredible story. I wasn't expecting all of the plot twists that showed up in this book, and the characters were all really fleshed-out and it was such an excellently written story as a whole. It's safe to say that I'd love to read more of Rebecca Yarros's work in the future -- I'm so glad that Scribbler put this book in my monthly box, because I ended up being introduced to a story that hooked me and I will now be recommending to all of my friends!

***Thank you so much to Margaret K. McElderry Books and NetGalley for the chance to read and review Sorcery of Thorns.***

I am always a little disappointed when a highly anticipated book ends up falling short on me. From the moment I laid eyes on the cover of Sorcery of Thorns I just knew I had to read it. I was lucky when the publisher approved me on NetGalley for the chance to read and review this book pre-publication. (Please note that this review was written on: May 17th)

The idea behind this book was really interesting. I love the grimoires and how they were alive, how there were different levels and how the was a whole society who was dedicated to being their keepers. Other then that, Sorcery of Thorns really didn't have much to offer me.

I liked Margaret's writing style and her writing flows nicely. But I strongly believe her characters could have used a bit more fleshing out. Elisabeth was the only character that was well fleshed out and rounded. I would have loved to see the characters on a more deeper level. Characters most of the time make or break or book for me and poorly developed characters really make it hard for me to enjoy a book.

I am not saying that Sorcery of Thorns was a horrible book. It simply wasn't for me. I read a few other reviews after finishing this book and though it wasn't my cup of tea it is well loved by so many other readers. I do recommend you to give this one a shot, it is intriguing and it does have a slow burn romance (Which I LOVEEEEEEEEEEE!)

Teaser Review: Crown of Coral and Pearl by Mara Rutherford

Title: Crown of Coral and Pearl
Author: Mara Rutherford
Genre: Fantasy
Source: Inkyard Press via NetGalley
Publisher: Inkyard Press
Publication Date: August 27th 2019

Summary:
For generations, the princes of Ilara have married the most beautiful maidens from the ocean village of Varenia. But though every girl longs to be chosen as the next princess, the cost of becoming royalty is higher than any of them could ever imagine… Nor once dreamed of seeing the wondrous wealth and beauty of Ilara, the kingdom that’s ruled her village for as long as anyone can remember. But when a childhood accident left her with a permanent scar, it became clear that her identical twin sister, Zadie, would likely be chosen to marry the Crown Prince—while Nor remained behind, unable to ever set foot on land. Then Zadie is gravely injured, and Nor is sent to Ilara in her place. To Nor’s dismay, her future husband, Prince Ceren, is as forbidding and cold as his home—a castle carved into a mountain and devoid of sunlight. And as she grows closer to Ceren’s brother, the charming Prince Talin, Nor uncovers startling truths about a failing royal bloodline, a murdered queen… and a plot to destroy the home she was once so eager to leave. In order to save her people, Nor must learn to negotiate the treacherous protocols of a court where lies reign and obsession rules. But discovering her own formidable strength may be the one move that costs her everything: the crown, Varenia and Zadie.

I've been working with Mara on an interview for the blog for the past few weeks, so I was super excited when I was approved on NetGalley for Crown of Coral and Pearl. I blew through this book in two sittings, it was a quick read with an intriguing story line that captured me from page one.

  • A Cute Prince. (Enough said, right?)

  • I really loved the bond between Nor and Zadie. Being twins and being groomed to become the next princess of Varenia. Especially how after Nor's accident and how the attention that was split among the both of them was now mostly focused on Zadie. Something that was devastating and had lasting consequences made the bond between the twins even stronger. The story shows how far you will go for the people you love and the sacrifices are willing to make for their happiness.

  • I loved the world building and how we go from a city built on the ocean to land and a castle built into a mountain with no sunlight. The two different settings are a stark contrast of each other and really change the tone of the novel.

  • The idea behind the pearls and the coral were really cool. I wish there was a little more detail into it but we did get enough to get answers that we needed.

Overall I really enjoyed Crown of Coral and Pearl and I am crossing my fingers for a sequel. I would love to see where these character's are going to go next and the fall out of the events of the end of the novel. If this does happen to be a stand alone, I've created a happily ever after for all of them. But fingers crossed!!!

Waiting On Wednesday: American Royals by Katharine McGee

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking The Spine where we highlight some of the upcoming books we can't wait to read!

Title: American Royals
Author: Katharine McGee
Genre: Romance, Alternative Fiction
Publisher: Random House Books for Young
Publication Date: September 3rd 2019

Summary:
What if America had a royal family? If you can't get enough of Harry and Meghan or Kate and William, meet American princesses Beatrice and Samantha. Two princesses vying for the ultimate crown. Two girls vying for the prince's heart. This is the story of the American royals. When America won the Revolutionary War, its people offered General George Washington a crown. Two and a half centuries later, the House of Washington still sits on the throne. Like most royal families, the Washingtons have an heir and a spare. A future monarch and a backup battery. Each child knows exactly what is expected of them. But these aren't just any royals. They're American. And their country was born of rebellion. As Princess Beatrice gets closer to becoming America's first queen regnant, the duty she has embraced her entire life suddenly feels stifling. Nobody cares about the spare except when she's breaking the rules, so Princess Samantha doesn't care much about anything, either . . . except the one boy who is distinctly off-limits to her. And then there's Samantha's twin, Prince Jefferson. If he'd been born a generation earlier, he would have stood first in line for the throne, but the new laws of succession make him third. Most of America adores their devastatingly handsome prince . . . but two very different girls are vying to capture his heart. The duty. The intrigue. The Crown. New York Times bestselling author Katharine McGee imagines an alternate version of the modern world, one where the glittering age of monarchies has not yet faded--and where love is still powerful enough to change the course of history.

Debut '19 Interview: Kalyn Josephson & The Storm Crow

In 2019 our goal is to work with as many debut authors as possible and spread the word about their debut novels. Follow us this year as we pick the mind of the 2019 debuts and chat with them. Also stay tuned for news of giveaways, twitter chats and more!

Over the summer we had tweeted about wanting to discover more debut authors and their books. I hadn't heard of THE STORM CROW before that, so when Kalyn replied and I read the summary I was instantly taken away. I am super excited for THE STORM CROW and I am even more excited that Kalyn has stopped by on The Book Bratz today to answer some questions!

About Kalyn!
Kalyn Josephson currently works as a Technical Writer in the tech industry, which leaves room for too many bad puns about technically being a writer. Though she grew up in San Luis Obispo, California, she graduated from Santa Clara University with a degree in Biology and a degree in English (Creative Writing). Currently, she lives in the Bay Area with four awesome friends (because it’s the Bay Area and she’d like to be able to retire one day) and two black cats (who are more like a tiny dragon and an ever tinier owl). THE STORM CROW is her debut novel.                                                     Keep up with Kalyn: Website / Twitter / Instagram

Interview!

The Book Bratz: How does it feel that THE STORM CROW is debuting this year?
Kalyn: So surreal! Publishing a book has been a dream of mine for so long, and I feel so grateful to everyone who helped me reach it. Now that it’s almost here, I’m a jumble of nerves, anticipation, excitement, doubt, and pretty much every other jittery emotion you can think of.

The Book Bratz: In the length of a tweet (280 characters!) can you give us an overall summary of THE STORM CROW?
Kayln: THE STORM CROW is ERAGON meets AND I DARKEN. A fallen princess ignites a rebellion to bring back the magical elemental crows that were taken from her people, all while navigating the vicious court of a dangerous enemy prince.

The Book Bratz: Where did your inspiration for THE STORM CROW come from?
Kayln: I read an article about a little girl who fed her neighborhood crows, and in return they brought her gifts. Her neighbors called her The Crow Queen, which really stuck with me. It made me think of a queen of a kingdom whose magic came from crows that were heavily integrated into her society. The question I was exploring was basically: what happens when they’re gone?

The Book Bratz: Is there anything from your personal life that you used as inspiration in THE STORM CROW?
Kayln: The main character, Thia, struggles with depression, which is something I myself dealt with a lot, especially during the time I was writing the book. Her healing journey is in some ways a reflection of mine (sans giant crows, unfortunately).

The Book Bratz: Can you share a secret about THE STORM CROW that not many people know yet?
Kalyn: Unfortunately I don’t have any cool secrets to share as of now.

The Book Bratz: If you had to create Twitter or Instagram handles for your characters, what would they be?

Kalyn:
  • Thia: @thecrowqueen
  • Kiva: @swordsarelife
  • Caylus: @teatinkerer
  • Ericen: @therealking

The Book Bratz: Do you have any ideas you plan to visit after THE STORM CROW?
Kalyn: Right now I’m focusing on book 2 (it’s a duology!). Other than that, I’m exploring a new YA Fantasy that I’d say is SCORPIO RACES meets PEAKY BLINDERS, with an influence of Jewish mythology.
