Top Ten Tuesday: Characters I'd Like To Switch Places With

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl in which we create bookish lists about everything from our favorite characters to love triangles and everything in between!

This week's theme: Characters I'd Like To Switch Places With

With almost every book I read, I find myself wanting to be that character. I've always wanted to dive deeper into the minds of these characters.

1. Lena Duchannes from the Beautiful Creatures Series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

2. Warner from the Shatter Me Series by Tahereh Mafi
-Boy, would I love to know what that man's thinking

3. Emika Chen from the Warcross Series by Marie Lu

4. Juliette Ferrars from the Shatter Me Series by Tahereh Mafi

5. Mare Barrow from the Red Queen Series by Victoria Aveyard

I know this is only five, but these are the characters that spoke to me the most over the years and the one's I would love to jump into the minds of.

Debut '19 Interview: Addie Thorley & An Affair of Poisons

In 2019 our goal is to work with as many debut authors as possible and spread the word about their debut novels. Follow us this year as we pick the mind of the 2019 debuts and chat with them. Also stay tuned for news of giveaways, twitter chats and more!

Today Addie Thorley stopped by the blog to talk a little bit more about her debut novel AN AFFAIR OF POISONS that has already been loved by so many readers! AN AFFAIR OF POISONS came out on February 26th, so make sure to add it to your TBR and order it after you read the interview!

About Addie!

Addie Thorley spent her childhood playing soccer, riding horses, and scribbling stories. After graduating from the University of Utah with a degree in journalism, she decided “hard news” didn’t contain nearly enough magic and kissing, so she flung herself into the land of fiction and never looked back. She now lives in Princeton, New Jersey with her husband, daughter, and wolf dog, and when she’s not writing she can be found gallivanting in the woods or galloping around the barn where she works as a horse trainer and exercise rider. AN AFFAIR OF POISONS is her debut novel.
Keep up with Addie on Twitter and her Website!

Interview!

The Book Bratz: How does it feel that AN AFFAIR OF POISONS is debuting this year?
Addie: It feels completely amazing but totally surreal. I don’t think I’ll believe it’s really happening until I hold the finished copy in my hands. Becoming a published author was a long and winding road for me (POISONS is the 5th novel I’ve written), and there were a lot of times I worried it was never going to happen for me. So this is an absolute dream come true, and I’m so excited and grateful.

The Book Bratz: In the length of a tweet (280 characters!) can you give us an overall summary of AN AFFAIR OF POISONS?

Addie: After unwittingly helping her mother poison King Louis XIV, a teenage alchemist must team up with her sworn enemy—the disgraced royal bastard—and form a plan to save both commoners and nobility from her mother’s desperate and diabolical Shadow Society. And smoke beasts!

The Book Bratz: Where did your inspiration for AN AFFAIR OF POISONS come from?
Addie: This is probably going to sound slightly creepy, but I have always been fascinated by poison. I love any book that features poison, so I always knew I wanted to write one. I’m also a huge history nerd, so I love scouring bygone times for interesting women to write about. One day, I just so happened to read about the infamous fortune teller and poisoner, La Voisin, and I had this feeling, deep in my gut, that I had found my next story. The fact that it took place in France was the icing on the cake. I am a HUGE Francophile, so it was like this story was made for me.

The Book Bratz: Is there anything from your personal life that you used as inspiration in AN AFFAIR OF POISONS?
Addie: Unfortunately, (or maybe fortunately!) I don’t dabble in poisons or alchemy in my personal life, but I did draw on my experiences growing up to create the complicated sibling dynamics both Josse and Mira face. I’m the oldest of five children, so I know how fiercely I wanted to protect and guard my younger siblings—really be that person they could count on. But on the flip side, I have a sister who is good at literally everything and made it her mission  to “show me up” my entire life, so I also know how these relationships can be fraught with jealousy and competition. Siblings have an innate and infuriating ability to know exactly how to push your buttons.

The Book Bratz: Can you share a secret about AN AFFAIR OF POISONS that not many people know yet?

Addie: I wrote An Affair of Poisons without ever having been to Paris! I spent months pouring over historical maps and studying diagrams of streets and palaces in order to build a convincing and accurate world. When I finally got to visit Paris, it was the coolest experience EVER! Almost like coming home. The city felt so familiar.

The Book Bratz: If you had to create Twitter or Instagram handles for your characters, what would they be?
Addie:
  • Mirabelle: @dangerousalchemy
  • Josse: @dancingmonkey
  • La Voisin: @thegreatergood

The Book Bratz: Do you have any ideas you plan to visit after AN AFFAIR OF POISONS?

Addie: I’m actually working on edits for my 2020 book right now! I can’t say too much yet, but it’s the start of a fantasy duology featuring a scarred criminal, a rebellious monk, and volatile night magic.

Summary:After unwittingly helping her mother poison King Louis XIV, seventeen-year-old alchemist Mirabelle Monvoisin is forced to see her mother’s Shadow Society in a horrifying new light: they’re not heroes of the people, as they’ve always claimed to be, but murderers. Herself included. Mira tries to ease her guilt by brewing helpful curatives, but her hunger tonics and headache remedies cannot right past wrongs or save the dissenters her mother vows to purge. Royal bastard Josse de Bourbon is more kitchen boy than fils de France. But when the Shadow Society assassinates the Sun King and half the royal court, he must become the prince he was never meant to be in order to save his injured sisters and the petulant Dauphin. Forced to hide in the derelict sewers beneath the city, any hope of reclaiming Paris seems impossible—until Josse’s path collides with Mirabelle’s, and he finds a surprising ally in his sworn enemy. She's a deadly poisoner. He's a bastard prince. Together, they form a tenuous pact to unite the commoners and former nobility against the Shadow Society. But can a rebellion built on mistrust ever hope to succeed?

About Mary:

Hi. I write books. I eat things. I kiss things. I believe in mermaids. I'm also the author of the Storm Siren Trilogy, The Evaporation of Sofi Snow series, and the March 2019 release, To Best the Boys. When not working, I sing 80’s hairband songs to my three muggle children, and ogle my husband who looks strikingly like Wolverine. We live in California, which is perfect for stalking aging movie stars while wearing fanny packs and sweatpants. For those who like to know such things (mainly my mom), Storm Siren was featured in the Scholastic Book Fair and my novels have been endorsed by such nice humans as Marissa Meyer, CJ Redwine, Shannon Messenger, and Jonathan Maberry (in fact, Marissa Meyer and I have a fun interview in the paperback of her book, CRESS). Also, Boba tea & sweatpants are life. {We can chat about life (in sweatpants over tea, obviously) in my Newsletter.

Review: 99 Percent Mine by Sally Thorne

Title: 99 Percent Mine
Author: Sally Thorne
Publisher: William Morrow Paperbacks
Rating: 5/5 Stars
Paperback, 368 Pages
Published January 2019

Summary: Darcy Barrett has undertaken a global survey of men. She’s travelled the world, and can categorically say that no one measures up to Tom Valeska, whose only flaw is that Darcy’s twin brother Jamie saw him first and claimed him forever as his best friend. Despite Darcy’s best efforts, Tom’s off limits and loyal to her brother, 99%. That’s the problem with finding her dream man at age eight and peaking in her photography career at age twenty—ever since, she’s had to learn to settle for good enough. When Darcy and Jamie inherit a tumble-down cottage from their grandmother, they’re left with strict instructions to bring it back to its former glory and sell the property. Darcy plans to be in an aisle seat halfway across the ocean as soon as the renovations start, but before she can cut and run, she finds a familiar face on her porch: house-flipper extraordinaire Tom’s arrived, he’s bearing power tools, and he’s single for the first time in almost a decade. Suddenly Darcy’s considering sticking around to make sure her twin doesn’t ruin the cottage’s inherent magic with his penchant for grey and chrome. She’s definitely not staying because of her new business partner’s tight t-shirts, or that perfect face that's inspiring her to pick up her camera again. Soon sparks are flying—and it’s not the faulty wiring. It turns out one percent of Tom’s heart might not be enough for Darcy anymore. This time around, she’s switching things up. She’s going to make Tom Valeska 99 percent hers.

I first heard of Sally Thorne when a friend of ours recommended THE HATING GAME to me, and ever since I read that book, I was absolutely hooked and tore through the entire book in a little more than a day. And it turns out that I read that book right in time, too -- because now her second novel, 99 Percent Mine, was due to come out soon, so I preordered it and got it as soon as I could! I'm super glad I did, because I loved this one just as much and it took me on just as much of an emotional roller coaster. So without further ado, let's get into the review!

As the summary explains, Darcy Barrett has been on a tailspin, and she feels like there's no way out of it. That is, of course, until it's time to start renovating her late grandmother's cabin, and she finds out that her contractor is Tom, childhood friend and beyond hot Viking god. And he's single for the first time in 8 years. And she's definitely not about to let her chance pass. So, as expected, tons of sexual tension and plot twists ensue.

I absolutely loved this book. As a hopeless romantic, seeing Darcy and Tom banter made me laugh, and there were some scenes in this book that definitely made me fan myself and swoon a little bit. Sally Thorne doesn't hold back on the white-hot romance, that's for sure! This book is over 300 pages but I still managed to tear through the entire thing in only a few days, because I couldn't put it down and I definitely wanted to know what was going to happen next. It was the worst case of "one more chapter" syndrome that I've had in the longest time!

Darcy's character was super hysterical. She basically blurted out whatever she was thinking, whether it was sarcastic or super X-rated, and it just made the story ten times funnier and more interesting because I always wanted to know what she was going to say next. There were definitely some scenes where I cringed or laughed out loud or hid my face in the book because I couldn't believe the amount of guts it took for her to say some of the things she wanted to say. It was definitely interesting, that's for sure!

On the other hand, Tom's character was super sweet and I found myself swooning over him more than once. He was basically this super sexy, super adorable Viking man with crazy muscles that wanted to protect everyone around him. At times he was such a sweet little cinnamon bun that I just wanted to give him a big hug. And other times...whew. I won't spoil anything for you guys, but all I'll say is that other times, he was something completely different. And something that I'd DEFINITELY like to get to know better. ;-)

(Spoilers ahead! Skip to the next paragraph to avoid them!) Another thing that I really loved about this book was the fact that it contained bonus content -- including epilogues for 99 PERCENT MINE and THE HATING GAME! The fact that both of them involved them getting engaged and married made my swoony little hopeless romantic heart sail over the moon. And seeing Lucy and Josh again was just adorable, especially when they described the proposal scene at the strawberry fields...ugh. It was all just so freaking adorable that my heart couldn't take it.

Overall, I absolutely loved 99 PERCENT MINE, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who read THE HATING GAME. Even if you haven't, as I mentioned earlier, you definitely can still read this one because they aren't companions and they aren't related in any way. This book takes you on an emotional rollercoaster that will make you swoon, gasp, and definitely blush a time or two. What are you waiting for? You need this book on your TBR as soon as possible!!

Hats off to Sally Thorne for this book -- it's safe to say that I'm definitely a fan of her work and that I'll be reading more of it in the future!
