Summary: Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least make it out of her neighborhood one day. As the daughter of an underground rap legend who died before he hit big, Bri’s got big shoes to fill. But now that her mom has unexpectedly lost her job, food banks and shutoff notices are as much a part of Bri’s life as beats and rhymes. With bills piling up and homelessness staring her family down, Bri no longer just wants to make it—she has to make it.

When I first heard that Angie Thomas was writing another book, I threw it on my TBR immediately because The Hate U Give was such an incredible hit that I knew I wanted to read more from her. As this book rocketing up the NYT bestseller list, I knew I wanted to pick it up and give it a try, and I'm glad I did. Without further ado, let's get into my review!

As the summary explains, Bri is an up-and-coming rapper, the daughter of famous underground rapper Lawless. She knows she has big shoes to fill, and rapping is her dream, but things start to derail when she finds herself going viral for all of the wrong reasons. Struggling and frustrated, wanting to get the right message out there but seeming to mess up every time, she has to fight for her dream while also finding a way to save her struggling family and staying out of trouble.

I definitely enjoyed reading this book. Bri's voice was really funny to read, and she was definitely a different narrator than Starr was in The Hate U Give. Starr spent a majority of the book feeling like she was caught between two worlds, not sure where and when she could speak up and use her voice (although she definitely found it in the end!). With Bri, she was outspoken from the get go, constantly getting in trouble at school for mouthing off (in the best way, I loved reading her being unapologetically herself!). As Angie has Tweeted a few different times, Starr and Bri felt like different children to her, both equally loved, and I felt the same way as a reader -- both of their personalities were super different, but at the core they're both incredible, powerful characters that I found myself cheering for as I kept reading. This book was definitely a well-written read!

My favorite character in this book was definitely Jay, Brianna's mom. Even though she had some of her own past struggles, as soon as we meet her on the page, she is there for her kids and fighting to be the best mom she can be. She is so resilient and badass that I found myself cheering for her whenever she was on the page!

Overall, I definitely enjoyed reading On The Come Up, and it's clear to me why this book has been so popular. I'm definitely hooked on Angie Thomas's writing, and she's definitely a master at creating a super powerful story. If you haven't read anything by her before, I definitely recommend starting now. You won't be sorry!
