Summary: Showing consent and character-driven erotic relationships, Super Fun Sexy Times answers the age-old question: what happens when the mask comes off? Two sidekicks on opposite sides get stuck in an underground lab together, and find a great way to pass the time. A tactician and superhero discuss their desires, limits, and kinks before their first time, and perhaps get a little too excited in the process. A pair of supervillains explore gender and sex together, while growing closer in their relationship. Lesbian heroes try out a kinky rolepaying scenario, and discover how to make it work for both of them. And an exhausted assassin relaxes after a long day with the kind (yet firm) attentions of his husband. Told with care, sex-positivity, and humor, and featuring a wide variety of sexualities and bodies, Super Fun Sexy Times aims to create an erotic reading experience that lives up to its name!
I picked up an ARC of Super Fun Sexy Times during BookExpo this year, after there was a giant NSFW sign next to it, which immediately made me and Amber curious, so we picked up copies and actually read this book in the hotel after that day on the show floor, giggling the whole time, because this story was super hilarious -- which I'm about to get into a little more, so let's get into my review!
First thing's first, this book was absolutely hilarious. Like I said, Amber and I were laughing so hard that our sides hurt, for several reasons: For starters, the idea of a book being categorized as ~*superhero erotica*~ wasn't something we had ever seen before, and also there's the fact that there's a lot of humor in the chapters, especially right out of the gate with the two superhero enemies who find themselves locked in the same lab. There were a lot of jokes, little quips, and sarcasm to keep the story rolling and to keep us laughing at all times. So that's something we really enjoyed about it!
Another important thing about this book is how sex-positive it is. A lot of important topics are covered in this book amid all of the humor, such as consent, pleasure, listening to your partner, acting out fantasies, boundaries, safe words, etc. A lot of different relationships also get explored in this story as well. There are LGBTQIAP+ relationships, the exploration of gender identity, kink conversations, fantasy boundaries, etc. The messages are delivered so clearly and perfectly while also managing to be hilarious, so it actually lends itself to becoming a really enjoyable story that sucks you in. The fact that it's super short means that you fly through it as well!
An important thing to note is that the images in this novel are pretty graphic, so just a) make sure you're prepared for that, so if seeing cartoonized genitalia isn't your cup of tea, maybe you want to skip this one, and b) you definitely do not want to read this book in public, at work, or pretty much anywhere that any family members are lurking. I had to wait until everyone in my house left for the day so I could finish this book, because I was so paranoid that my mom or my sister or someone was going to stroll in and see the book and pick it up out of curiosity, and then BAM, I scarred them for life. ...It would've been pretty hilarious to see, though.
Overall, I loved Super Fun Sexy Times. Not only was it hilarious and something out of the usual bounds of what I read, but it also managed to discuss a lot of important topics like consent, gender identity, LGBTQIAP+ relationships, and more. I wasn't expecting to love this book as much as I did, pretty much just because superhero erotica isn't really something I ever saw myself reading, but I'm glad that Amber and I decided to pick this one up, because we got a great series of stories in addition to some good laughs.
