Keep up with Katy:

The Book Bratz: How does it feel that THERE WILL COME A DARKNESS is debuting this year?
Katy: Really, really exciting. This was a book that took a lot of time to get right--years in which I was never sure it would see the light of day. To finally be releasing it feels like the biggest accomplishment of my life. And beyond that, I’m just beyond excited that readers are going to be introduced to this world and these characters who have lived inside my head for so long.

The Book Bratz: In the length of a tweet (280 characters!) can you give us an overall summary of THERE WILL COME A DARKNESS?
Katy: In a world inspired by the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, five lives are set on a collision course by a prophecy that predicts an age of darkness. Each of them must figure out whether they they will save the world...or break it.

The Book Bratz: Where did your inspiration for THERE WILL COME A DARKNESS come from?
Katy: Honestly, I was inspired by many different things that all cooked together for years until they formed the beginnings of this book by some kind of magical alchemy. Some memorable inspirations are the “prophecies” of William Blake, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the album Age of Adz, the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and even the Book of Revelation. My brain likes to latch onto really specific details for inspiration and then transform them until they’re almost unrecognizable.

The Book Bratz: Is there anything from your personal life that you used as inspiration in THERE WILL COME A DARKNESS?
Katy: Two of the POV characters are sisters, both of whom love each other very much, but nevertheless do things that hurt one another, even as they’re trying to protect each other. I definitely think my relationship with my sister influenced writing these characters. While thankfully our real-life relationship is a lot less fraught, I wanted to show how important and complicated the bond between two sisters can be.

The Book Bratz: Can you share a secret about THERE WILL COME A DARKNESS that not many people know yet?
Katy: There Will Come a Darkness is actually the FIRST fantasy book I’ve ever finished!

The Book Bratz: If you had to create Twitter or Instagram handles for your characters, what would they be?
Katy: Ephyra would be @thePaleHand, probably. Hassan would be @HeratHottie. Beru would have an instagram account to sell her homemade jewelry called @ephemeralDesign. Anton wouldn’t have any social media in an attempt to stay off-the-grid. Jude probably wouldn’t have social media either, but maybe he’d have a private instagram account called @SwordandHeart

The Book Bratz: Do you have any ideas you plan to visit after the THERE WILL COME A DARKNESS world?
Katy: Absolutely! Obviously I’m working hard on books 2 and 3 right now, so most of my headspace is devoted to this world and these characters, but there are certainly some other ideas that I’m hoping to work on once that series is done.

Title: There Will Come a Darkness (Age of Darkness #1)
Author: Katy Rose Pool
Genre: Fantasy
Publisher: Henry Holt and Co. (BYR)
Publication Date: September 3rd 2019
Summary:  The Age of Darkness approaches. Five lives stand in its way. Who will stop it... or unleash it?  For generations, the Seven Prophets guided humanity. Using their visions of the future, they ended wars and united nations―until the day, one hundred years ago, when the Prophets disappeared. All they left behind was one final, secret prophecy, foretelling an Age of Darkness and the birth of a new Prophet who could be the world’s salvation . . . or the cause of its destruction. As chaos takes hold, five souls are set on a collision course: A prince exiled from his kingdom. A ruthless killer known as the Pale Hand. A once-faithful leader torn between his duty and his heart.  A reckless gambler with the power to find anything or anyone. And a dying girl on the verge of giving up. One of them―or all of them―could break the world. Will they be savior or destroyer?
