Lately there have been several covers that have been changed from originals, to something completely new. Recently The Winner's Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski went through a cover change, and some readers weren't very happy with it. (In my case I actually liked the change)
I haven't read the series yet, so I'm not sure how closely the covers relate to the actual story lines. I do like the colors! But I know a lot of people seemed unhappy about the change.
I wasn't happy about this change. Look at the before, the are steamy, colorful and eye catching. The afters are so simple, and though I appreciate each of the characters having their own cover it was disappointing. But here is where it is confusing, Every Last Breathe redo is available in paperback, but the others are kindle copies. The originals for White Hot Kiss and Stone Cold Touch are still available in paperback.
Above are only two of the many covers that have been redone. From asking around changing the covers seems to be a form of promotion and a publishing decision. Which I do get. It makes sense. It's not like the designers are like "I am going to change this cover for fun." But it does suck when this happens because you just want all your books to match and now they don't!
I was so very upset about the cover change for The Winner's Kiss!! But when they decided to keep the old cover for the HC and the new ones for the PB all was good again!
ReplyDeleteI've heard that! I still like the new covers though *hides*
DeleteI never really like cover changes, especially The Mortal Instrument and Clockwork ones, WHY WHY WHY?! I adore the original TWC covers, but I think they thought they were too elegant so they're trying to appeal to a different reader crowd with more "badass" covers. I still don't understand why she's holding knives, Kestrel's weapon is her sharp mind. It's sad how important a cover is to attract people to the book's innards :0

I typically like cover changes, they spice things up. Then make the fandom bigger. I am not familiar with The Winner's Curse series so I wouldn't really know :/
DeleteI love posts about the different cover changes. I think I'm on the saem page as you with these.
ReplyDeleteI've not read The Winner's trilogy, but I too like the cover redesign a lot. I think it looks more badass, and I am way more likely to pick that off the shelf than the originals. I've not read the Dark Elements series either, but I do like the original more. The redesign is a bit boring, in my opinion.
Great post!

Yay! Same, I would pick up the new cover if I saw it in the store. The Dark Elements makes me so so so angry!
DeleteI have not read any of these series but I definitely prefer the original ones for the Winner's Curse. The redoes are better than the Dark Elements!

Redos are either good are bad. There is never an in between
DeleteUgh, The Dark Elements covers are so plain! Mind you, I wasn't much of a fan of the original ones, but they were better. :/
ReplyDeleteThey were at least more colorful!
DeleteI (usually) understand the reasoning behind cover changes but that doesn't make them any less annoying. I haven't read The Winner's trilogy yet but I much prefer the original covers. The Dark Elements - loved that trilogy and the original covers were so much better! he one that bugs me the most is the Lux series. I swear, I think I'm the only person who actually likes the original covers, and always have. Then the last book gets released in a new/different cover. Ugh! Whyyyy! So annoying.

Don't get me started on the Lux series, I am still not over it if you want me to be honest. How do you do that!?
DeleteOh my goodness! a great article dude. Thanks a lot!
